For more information on Area and Perimeter...
  • This link is an interactive link for you to use that should help explain perimeter and area a little better.

Area is the amount of surface that the figure covers. Area is measured in square units.
  • For example, square centimeters are written like this: sq. cm. or cm squared.
  • So when we write the Area of a shape or figure, we will include the units, cm squared.

An easy way to tell the difference between perimeter and area is to remember this:
  • Perimeter measures the outside of a shape. ( + sides) * Here are some pictures of Mrs. Weeks' class measuring the perimeter of items around our classroom!

Area measures the space inside of a shape. (x)

The formula for finding area is: A = length x height

*This way only works for squares and rectangles.
